Our Services

General Dentistry/Checkups

Our most common service, check-ups and routine procedures like twice yearly cleanings, are the meat and potatoes of healthy, strong teeth. Everybody needs a little professional cleaning to chip away tar and bacteria build-up. We check for the formation of cavities and any sign of gum disease.

General dentistry includes checking overall oral health, which means not just your teeth, but the health of your gums, signs of nutritional deficiency, and destructive habits alike teeth grinding.

Educating patients, especially kids, about dental hygiene is part of a dentist visit. We help patients participate in making informed decisions about their long term dental care and current treatment options.

Kids Dentistry

We do a little bit more, and are a little extra nice to our young patients. The office is outfitted with kid friendly amenities. Dr Cochran and staff keep the atmosphere friendly and relaxed, so you're kids entire dental experience is positive. The lights are dimmed and soft fuzzy blankets are provided to help create a relaxed setting. Laughing gas is available, if needed, and all treatments are done quickly and precisely, with a light touch. Routine checkups, exams, regular cleanings and fillings are completed with little to no fuss, and the promise of a lollipop at the end of the appointment.

The American Dental Association recommends that babies and toddlers that have sprouted their first teeth are encouraged to make their first dentist's visit. Dr. C and staff always give the warmest welcome to the smallest patients. Go to our children's dentistry page to learn more. Find Out More

Braces

One of our more innovative treatments are braces for adults, called Six Month Smiles. These braces are designed for adult. They are less expensive than conventional braces and need to be worn for as long as six months only. This orthodontic technology is more affordable than Invisalign, but results in the same sparkling smile.

Orthodontic braces no longer need metal braces all the time. The Six Month Smiles uses invisible, clear aligners. These adult braces are designed to align the most visible teeth to help project a more even smile, which is one of the reasons it takes only six months to set. This procedure is not intended to realign the whole bite, which could take years in braces for an adult. After completing the Six Month Smiles, patients wear a retainer for a period, to prevent teeth from going back to their original position.

If you are interested in adult braces, make an appointment with Dr. C Family Dentistry so we can assess you eligibility for the Six Month Smiles program. These adult brace are best for those who want selective, permanent changes to the alignment of their teeth, to improve the overall symmetry of their smile.

Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety is a real condition we see too often, and it makes dental treatments worse than they really need to be. Patient comfort is a priority at Dr Cochran's office. We explain all treatment options with patients, and the option for sedation is definitely on the table. Many dental procedures make patients nervous. Some of the more intense and time consuming treatments, like root canal and implants, can be done under mild sedation. Patients get some chemical aid to help relax and beat dental anxiety.

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas is a safe sedation option applied to children, to help relieve anxiety or fear. There are other sedative options that will help you feel more comfortable in a dentist's chair. For those who would like sedation dentistry as part of their treatment, Dr Cochran and his staff will review your medical history, habits and vices, especially alcohol and tobacco use, to assess how fit you are for treatment with sedation.

Oral Surgery

Getting a tooth extracted is one of the most common nightmares in the human psyche. As much as possible, we want to save your natural teeth. But sometimes, there really is no choice but to take a tooth out, or you may also prefer to have the tooth taken out as part of your treatment, such as with wisdom teeth. Infections that are persistently painful and advanced tooth decay are the most common reasons for getting a tooth pulled.

There are several ways a tooth can be replaces, and we'll be glad to explain your replacement options. Set an appointment with Dr C Family Dentistry, and we'll set you up with exams and X-rays right here at our office.

Root Canal

A root canal is often a last ditch effort to save a tooth. The mere mention of 'root canal' has the effect of a jolt in the gut for many people. There's a common misconception that root canal is synonymous with torture. But with new technology, root canals don't have to be an ordeal of pain and suffering. Plus, we have sedation options for all our patients.

A tooth that needs a root canal is one that is already always painful, often with lots of swelling caused by bacteria around the gums. Without a root canal, the pulp tissue within the tooth is consumed by bacteria and the tooth is eventually lost. What a root canal does is extract tissue and nerves that are already damaged, and seals the tooth so bacteria can't re-enter. This relieves swelling, pain and controls infection. The first thing you notice, is that the treatment relieves pain.

If you have a nagging toothache, don't hesitate to call our office. It could be a dental emergency. Dr. Cochran and staff always have an open slot for emergency patients and would be happy to help you.

Cosmetic Bleaching

Clean looking white teeth can be a big boost to one's confidence. Dental cosmetic bleaching is safe and effective at whitening teeth, it's also affordable. The teeth naturally stain and turn yellow as we age. Those who regularly drink tea or coffee, smoke, or just eat food with dark colorings like berries, tend to get stained teeth.

Teeth whitening can have a dramatic change on your appearance. The procedure is quick and you can get teeth as much as eight shades lighter after one treatment. This is faster and much more economical than a lot of at-home whitening products. Whiter teeth will make you look younger and more vibrant. If you have questions and would like to know more, don't hesitate to call us or send a message to Dr. C Family Dentistry.

Teeth are very resilient. Enamel, the surface of our teeth, is the hardest material in our body. But teeth do get weak and wear down in time. They may crack or spit from injury, and the tooth's shape can also change. What a crown does is restore a tooth's strength, shape and function. If the tooth felt sensitive before, a crown will take care of that.

A crown is done on just one tooth, while a dental bridge is done on multiple teeth right next to each other. Both crowns and bridges use porcelain pieces to cover and protect the chewing surface of the teeth.

A dental bridge can replace missing teeth or repair existing teeth. A bridge can be removed, so it is easier to clean. An implant with a crown replaces a single tooth. Both a dental bridge and a crown can be made to look and feel like natural teeth. Dr. Cochran and staff will be glad to explain and explore tooth repair and replacement options, so you can decide what's best for you.

Tooth loss can be devastating to the self-esteem. Not having any kind of teeth replacement can also affect your nutrition, as it becomes difficult to eat most kinds of food. This is why full or partial dentures are important for those with missing teeth. There are more permanent options for tooth replacement, such as implants and bridgework. Each treatment plan has their pros and cons, and we can help you decide which is best for you.

Dentures however, is one of the oldest remedies for tooth lose, and we can offer you several different types of dentures, for different conditions and preferences. Set an appointment with us so we can show you your teeth replacement options, and be part of your teeth solution.

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. It's one of those diseases that works slowly, affecting the gums at first, then loosening teeth from the gum and jaw. Gum disease happens because of poor oral hygiene, poor nutrition, or as a side-effect of medication. Some people, such as pregnant women, diabetics and those with heart disease, are more likely to develop gum disease.

Symptoms of gum disease usually present in those in their 30s or 40s. It's rare for a younger person to get gingivitis, but it does happen. Gum disease happens when plaque builds close to the gum, and introduces bacteria into the gum tissue. The gums get an infection, causing some swelling and bad breath.

Whenever you visit us here at Dr. C, our dental hygienists can give you an examination and assess the health of you gums and teeth. Regular dentist visits is the best way to prevent or catch gum disease in its early stages, before it leads to tooth loss.

Some Dental Tips for You

Top 2 Everyday Food Options for Bad Breath

Bad breath can be painfully embarrassing, it makes you self-conscious and is unpleasant for everybody. A visit to Spokane Valley dentist can confirm for you if bad breath is caused by simple plaque build-up in the mouth or a more serious health issue. If you suspect your unpleasant smell is caused by the food you choose to eat, then here are some food options you can try to counter some common causes of unpleasant breath.

Tips for Coping with Dental Anxiety

Dental anxiety is more common in adults than many care to admit. It’s embarrassing and seen as childish to be afraid of the dentist Spokane Valley, but many people are. If only secretly. As much as one in five American adults admit to avoiding the dentists because it gives them more anxiety than they can handle. The more extreme form of dental anxiety, dental phobia, is a crippling fear that is uncontrollable and irrational. As a result, many of those too afraid of the dentist, avoid visits until they are forced to by a severe toothache or infection.

Checklist to Help Decide on Adult Dental Braces

One in five Americans visiting an orthodontist or dentist Spokane Valley for braces are adults. Long gone is the practice where braces are only for children. Adults who regret not having braces as a child now want straighter teeth or their bite adjusted more comfortably with the aid of braces. If you find yourself in this position, continue reading. An orthodontist or dentist is the best person to give advise on whether braces can help you as an adult or not.

Ask Your Dentist if You Can Benefit from Cavity...

Dental sealants prevents cavities on chewing surfaces of the teeth, applied to permanent 6 and 12 year molars. Because tooth decay begins very early in life, sealants are usually applied to children and teens whose permanent molars and premolars have come out, before they develop carries. Carries first show in the grooves of the crown of molars where sealant is applied to prevent the onset of cavities in newly erupted teeth. Sealants can also help protect the teeth of adults, but consult a dentist if it will be beneficial in your case.

Without Flossing, 40% of Your Tooth Surface is Prone to...

Did you know that 3 out of 4 Americans will choose to go grocery shopping rather than floss? Using a toothpick does not count as flossing. Floss dislodges food between teeth, it scrapes plaque and polishes the tooth. While the toothbrush can clean the crown and sides of the tooth, floss reaches between teeth, where a lot of food gets stuck, and removes smellier bits of plaque. This is why flossing is also very effective at keeping bad breath at bay. Food that gets stuck between teeth rot, create plaque and feed bacteria that causes bad breath in the mouth.

Make Dentistry Fun for Kids, Helpful Tips to Try at Home

Starting your kids early on dental hygiene creates a lifelong foundation for healthy permanent teeth that can keep for a lifetime. Poor diet and habits in the first 2 year of life is linked to higher incidence of tooth decay in older children. Just because kids teeth are not permanent, doesn’t mean they should be neglected. Poor oral health from the very beginning is practiced for several more years even after children grow out their permanent teeth. Dr.C Family Dentistry will help you to learn some kids dentistry technique that you can try at home to keep your children’s teeth healthy. Create a solid hygiene habit for your children from the very beginning with the help of a dental hygienist or dentist.

Tips to Include Dentist Visits to Your Child’s Routine

As a family dentist, we regularly see a lot of children at our Spokane Valley dentist office. The staff are extra nice to kids, there are video games and a TV in the lobby to keep them distracted. We do as much as we can to keep our patients comfortable and happy, especially when it comes to children, because kids are not shy about throwing a fit. Adults do that at the dentist too, but it breaks our hearts when kids get teary eyed.

How to Know You’ve Cracked a Toothbrush

A cracked or fractured tooth is tricky to identify and a dentist treatment does not always successfully take away symptoms. Cracked tooth syndrome happens when your tooth fractures, but does not completely chip. When you visit our Spokane Valley dentist practice, you get an exam and X-rays, and we can sometimes catch a cracked tooth after a routine check, and treat it quickly. But the sad truth is, some fine fractures don’t show on X-rays and when the crack is not visible above the gum line, we can’t spot it. This is terrible, since a cracked tooth can be dangerous, it opens up the tooth to bacteria and infection. There’s a possibility a cracked tooth will need to be removed, but as your dentist, we will do everything to repair and store the tooth.
